Marvel fans are loving new hero-shooter ‘Rivals’: “Feels like it’s ripped directly from the comics”

Over 10million fans have played since it launched last week

Marvel fans have praised new hero-shooter video game Rivals, saying it feels like it’s been “ripped directly from the comics”.

Marvel Rivals was announced back in March. The Overwatch-inspired hero-shooter features a deep roster of heroes and villains from across the Marvel universe. Each character has their own unique skill set, and can work together with other heroes to activate a number of “team-up” powers for the 6v6 battles.

As well as a team-based multiplayer, Marvel Rivals also features a storyline that sees Doctor Doom clash with a future version of himself, causing a number of universes to collide. “Now, heroes and villains from across the multiverse must fight together and against one another as disparate groups seek to defeat both Dooms before one achieves domination of these realities,” said developers NetEase.

Marvel Rivals launched on Friday (December 6) and has already attracted over 10million players.

“Zero server issues has been the highlight for me, been able to play at any point without problems or queue times,” one fan wrote on the Resetera forums. “I think this game will seriously cause other games to step up. Tons of playable characters from day one, unique designs, rock solid servers and of course, fun to play,” wrote another. “It’s honestly how crazy the servers have been performing on launch weekend considering how many players there are. I’m genuinely impressed,” one fan wrote on Reddit.

“Whether the game lives or dies, Disney needs to hire their art department. The character designs are so fucking good. I hope they aren’t wasted,” said another fan, with others praising the strong visual identity of Marvel Rivals.

“The character designs and style of the game feels like it’s ripped directly from the authentic comic books. The gameplay is VERY fun. Every character is a blast to play with,” wrote a third, with the storyline also taking heavy influence from a number of iconic Marvel comics. “The writers know what they’re talking about.”

Marvel Rivals currently has a “mostly positive” score on Steam, with other 35,000 players reviewing the game. The success of the game is even more surprising considering developers tried to ban negative reviews for early access players.

In other news, Japanese hip-hop crew Don Yasa have released an official demo for Sonokuni, their Hotline Miami-inspired video game, alongside a new song from the soundtrack.
